Matcha vs Hojicha: Which Tea Is Right for You?

Jun 28, 2026

If you have spent any time browsing tea shops in Dubai, Abu Dhabi scrolling through Japanese tea brands online, you have probably come across two names again and again: matcha and hojicha. Both are Japanese green teas. Both come in that same fine powder form. And both have been showing up everywhere lately, from café menus in Abu Dhabi to home kitchens across the UAE.

But here is the thing. They are not the same drink, and they are definitely not interchangeable. One will wake you up. The other will wind you down. One is bright green. The other is warm, brown, and almost caramel-like. Pick the wrong one for the wrong moment and you will wonder what all the fuss is about.

So let's break it down properly. what each tea actually is, how they differ, and which one fits into your day better.

What Is Matcha?

Matcha is made from shade-grown green tea leaves that are picked young, steamed, dried, and then stone-milled into an extremely fine powder. Because you are drinking the entire leaf rather than steeping and discarding it, matcha delivers a much more concentrated dose of nutrients, antioxidants, and caffeine than a regular cup of green tea.

This is also why matcha has that vivid emerald colour. The shade-growing process boosts chlorophyll and L-Theanine levels in the leaves, which is what gives ceremonial grade matcha its bright green shade and naturally smooth, slightly grassy flavour.

If you have ever had a matcha latte at a café in Dubai and felt more alert afterward than you expected, that is the caffeine talking. Matcha typically contains a good amount of natural caffeine, paired with an amino acid called L-theanine, which is known to produce a calmer, more focused kind of energy rather than the jittery spike you get from coffee.

What Is Hojicha?

Hojicha starts from a similar place, Japanese green tea leaves, but takes a completely different path. Instead of being kept green and milled fresh, the leaves are roasted. This roasting step is what changes everything.

The roasting process turns the leaves from green to a reddish-brown colour, mellows out the grassy bitterness you find in matcha, and brings out a warm, nutty, almost toasted flavour that some people compare to caramel or roasted chestnuts. It is genuinely one of the easiest teas to enjoy, even if you have never liked the taste of green tea before.

The roasting also does something else important: it significantly lowers the caffeine content. Hojicha is naturally one of the lowest-caffeine teas in the Japanese tea family, which is exactly why it is traditionally served in the evening in Japan, often to children and elderly family members.

Matcha vs Hojicha: The Real Differences

Here is a simple side-by-side so you can see exactly where they part ways.

Very approachable, even for first-timers

If you are someone who needs a proper pick-me-up in the morning, matcha is doing exactly that job. If you want something to sip in the evening without ruining your sleep, hojicha is built for that.

Which One Should You Choose?

Honestly, this is not really an either-or decision. Most people who get into Japanese tea end up keeping both in their kitchen, because they serve two completely different purposes.

Choose matcha if:

  • You want a natural energy boost without the coffee crash

  • You enjoy a slightly bitter, earthy flavour

  • You are making lattes, smoothies, or baking with it

  • You want the antioxidant and L-theanine benefits matcha is known for

Choose hojicha if:

  • You are sensitive to caffeine or trying to cut back

  • You want something to drink in the evening

  • You prefer warm, comforting flavours over bitter ones

  • You are introducing kids or older family members to Japanese tea

A good rule of thumb: matcha in the morning, hojicha in the evening. That single habit is how a lot of people in Japan structure their day, and it works just as well in Dubai or Abu Dhabi as it does in Kyoto.

How to Prepare Both at Home

You do not need to be an expert to make either of these properly. The basic method is almost identical.

  1. Sift 2 grams of matcha or hojicha powder into a bowl to remove any clumps

  2. Add about 60ml of hot water (70–80°C for matcha, slightly hotter for hojicha)

  3. Whisk briskly in a "W" motion using a bamboo whisk until frothy

  4. Drink as is, or pour over milk for a latte

The one tool that makes a real difference here is the whisk. A regular spoon or fork simply cannot create the smooth, frothy texture that a proper bamboo chasen does. If you are just starting out, a complete starter kit with the bowl, whisk, sifter, and scoop takes the guesswork out of it completely.

Final Thoughts

Matcha and hojicha are not competing teas. They are two different tools for two different moods. Matcha is your focus and energy drink. Hojicha is your wind-down, comfort-in-a-cup drink. Once you have both in your kitchen, you will probably find yourself reaching for whichever one matches the moment, the same way you might choose coffee over herbal tea depending on the time of day.

If you are in the UAE and want to try both without guessing which brand to trust, Hallnara sources ceremonial grade matcha and roasted hojicha directly from Japan, stone-milled and lab-tested, with delivery across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and all seven emirates.

Is hojicha or matcha better for beginners?

Hojicha is usually the easier starting point. It has a warm, nutty flavour with no bitterness, so it tends to appeal to people even if they have never enjoyed green tea before. Matcha has a more distinct, slightly bitter taste that some people need a few tries to appreciate.

Does hojicha have any caffeine at all?

Yes, but very little. The roasting process used to make hojicha significantly reduces its caffeine content compared to matcha or regular green tea, which is why it is considered safe to drink in the evening.

Can I mix matcha and hojicha together?

Some people do enjoy blending the two for a milder, rounder flavour with a gentler caffeine kick than pure matcha. It is not traditional, but there is no harm in experimenting to find what you like.

Which tea is better for weight loss or skin health?

Matcha is generally associated with a higher concentration of antioxidants called catechins, which is part of why it gets more attention for wellness benefits. Hojicha still offers benefits from its roasted leaves, just at a gentler intensity overall.
