How to Make Matcha at Home: 5 Steps to a Smooth, Lump-Free Bowl Every Time

Oct 20, 2026

If your matcha keeps coming out clumpy, bitter, or just not quite right, it's almost never the matcha itself it's usually one small step in the process. The good news is there are only five steps between you and a genuinely smooth, properly frothed bowl, and once you've got them down, you'll make it the same way every single time without thinking twice.

Matcha Tools you need before you start

A chawan or a wide bowl, a bamboo whisk, a fine sifter, and about 2 grams of ceremonial grade matcha. Water heated to the right temperature matters more than people expect, so keep a kettle or thermometer nearby rather than guessing.

If you don't own these yet, the Hallnara Matcha Starter Kit gives you the bowl, bamboo whisk, sifter, and scoop in one set, so you're not piecing tools together from different places. If you already have a kit but want to upgrade a specific piece, the Accessories collection has individual chawans and whisks on their own.

Step 1: Sift your Matcha Powder to prevent lumps

This is the step most people skip, and it's the single biggest reason matcha ends up lumpy. Matcha powder is extremely fine and clumps easily just from sitting in the tin, so sift 2 grams through a fine sifter directly into your bowl before adding any water at all. Trying to whisk out lumps after the water's already in makes the job far harder than it needs to be.

This matters more if your matcha has been open a while see our guide on how to store matcha properly if you've noticed more clumping than usual lately, since humidity and improper sealing are often the real culprit.

Step 2: Heat water to the right Matcha Temperature

Boiling water is the enemy of good matcha, it scorches the powder and brings out bitterness that shouldn't be there. Heat your water to between 70 and 80°C, just below a simmer. If you don't have a thermometer, boil the water and let it sit for about a minute before using it, which usually gets you close enough.

Step 3: Add water gradually to your Matcha

Pour about 60 to 70ml of water into your bowl with the sifted matcha, adding it gradually rather than all at once. A small amount first lets you work the matcha into a smooth paste before diluting it further, which makes the whisking step far more effective.

Step 4: Whisk Matcha in a brisk W motion

This is where the magic actually happens. Hold your whisk loosely and move it back and forth in a quick "W" or "M" shape, not in slow circles. Circular whisking doesn't create froth the way a fast, light back-and-forth motion does. Keep going for about 20 to 30 seconds until the surface is smooth and covered in a fine, even froth with no visible lumps.

Your whisk itself matters here too if the prongs have started splaying or losing their shape, no amount of technique will fix the froth. Our guide on how to clean and care for your bamboo whisk covers exactly how to keep it performing properly for months rather than weeks.

Step 5: Taste and finish your Matcha Latte

Once it's frothy and smooth, taste it. If it's too strong, a little more hot water balances it out. If you're making a latte, this is the point where you pour your whisked matcha over milk, oat milk, or your liquid of choice.

If you haven't settled on which matcha origin you prefer yet, it's worth reading Kagoshima vs Okayama: Which One Should You Choose? Kagoshima is smoother and more forgiving for this exact step, while Okayama holds up with more structure if you prefer a bolder cup.

5 common mistakes that cause Lumpy Matcha

Skipping the sifter: Even expensive matcha will clump without this step it's not optional.

Using boiling water: This is the most common reason matcha tastes bitter rather than smooth.

Whisking in circles instead of a W motion: Circular whisking just moves the powder around instead of properly aerating it.

Adding all the water at once: This makes it much harder to break down the initial clumps before the mixture is diluted.

Using a fork or spoon instead of a bamboo whisk. Nothing else creates the same fine, stable froth see our guide to choosing matcha accessories if you're still deciding what's actually worth buying.

Building matcha into your daily morning ritual

Once you've done this a handful of times, the whole process takes under three minutes and genuinely becomes second nature. If you're wondering when to actually drink it for the best effect, our guide on the best time to drink matcha covers that in more detail and if this becomes a daily habit, it's worth checking whether a matcha subscription makes sense for how often you're reordering.

Hallnara delivers ceremonial grade matcha and complete starter kits across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and all seven UAE emirates. Explore the Ceremonial Matcha Tea collection or the Matcha Starter Kit to get these five steps right from your very first bowl.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my matcha always come out lumpy?

This almost always comes down to skipping the sifting step, or whisking in circles instead of a fast back-and-forth "W" motion. Both steps are essential for a smooth result.

What water temperature should I use for matcha?

Between 70 and 80°C never boiling, which scorches the powder and brings out unwanted bitterness.

Can I use a regular whisk or fork instead of a bamboo whisk?

Not really, a bamboo whisk's fine prongs create a stable froth that a fork or regular whisk simply can't replicate.

How much matcha should I use per bowl?

Around 2 grams, which is roughly one standard bamboo scoop, is the typical amount for a single serving.

Where can I buy a matcha starter kit in the UAE?

Hallnara delivers complete matcha starter kits across all UAE emirates. Browse the full range at hallnara.com.
